How Will I Use The Funds?

King LOTUS BOY

This microgrant will help supplement my expenses for cost of living and medical necessities, to support me in continuing to create accessible, impactful, multimedia performances, as well as accessible and COVID-conscious community events in the Bay Area. The events I organize provide access features such as: KN95/N95 masks required (and provided), performers must have at least two negative rapid tests two days apart OR a negative PlusLife/PCR test the day of the event before unmasking, outdoor stages and dancefloors, wheelchair accessible venue, ASL Interpretation, captions, audio description, and low-stimulation spaces. All my events feature sliding scale tickets and NOTAFLOF, which results in sometimes barely breaking even, or simply not making enough money to compensate myself and the other organizers our ideal rates, despite the immense amount of time, labor, and love we put in. In all my digital performances, I include trigger/content warnings, and provide open captions. In all my in-person performances, whenever a projector is available, I create original video installations that feature open captions for music and spoken words. Since I began performing as a drag king in 2018, I have intentionally collaborated with, uplifted, and hired other disabled QT/BIPOC artists in my performances and events, and I intend to continue this as long as I am still breathing. I believe that disabled QTBIPOC are oracles, magicians, and healers with our embodied wisdoms, innovative survival tactics, and liberatory creations.

A light-skinned, transgender Chinese-American drag king stares into the
camera, while holding to his face a neon orange KN95 mask covered in
rhinestones. He wears matching orange fishnet gloves. He has bold,
furrowed eyebrows, a spiky black beard, and curly black hair in a
pompadour. His makeup contour is a gradient of neon red, orange and
yellow.

A Thank You Note

Creating "The Sistas Uprising Fund" has been a long-time dream since Claire was diagnosed with the marker for the rare blood cancer, multiple myeloma, in 2015. As you'll see at the bottom of "The Sistas Uprising Fund" page, Claire determined from a young age to create this fund because of her and her Mom, who had to fight to survive domestic violence. After Claire's diagnosis, she redetermined to create this fund to support marginalized creatives, focused initially on women survivors of trauma. We hope to gain enough funding for "Art & Mind 2028" so we can develop the next microgrant run in 2029!
